One of the partners in our criminal defence department, Penny Muir, was privately instructed to represent an individual on a firearms sentencing appeal.
The client had been advised, by his former solicitors, that it would be impossible to appeal, a 5 year mandatory sentence of imprisonment, handed down for possession of a stun gun .
Penny instructed the excellent Nick Doherty as counsel, a leading firearms expert, and together they persuaded the Court of Appeal that this case demonstrated exceptional circumstances and a custodial sentence of two years was substituted.
