Excellent Sentences for another 2 LNL Clients

gavelPossession with intent to supply

Sean Reilly acted for an individual who faced an allegation of possession of intent to supply 12kg of class B drugs (amphetamines). He would have faced a substantial custodial sentence to reflect the gravity of these allegations; however, after a detailed plea and mitigation, the judge sentenced him to only 20 months imprisonment. Another delighted and relieved LNL client.

S.20 GBH

Unan Choudhury represented a young professional boxer who was charged with s.20 GBH in which he was alleged to have broken another man’s jaw in an unprovoked attack. Unan represented the client from arrest through to sentence.

At his first appearance the District Judge stated that this was a level 1 offence, given the aggravating features. Unan managed to persuade the DJ to retain jurisdiction and allow Probation Services to assess him. She reluctantly agreed but stated that the PSR should consider all options including committal to the Crown Court for sentence.

At his sentencing hearing, it was again mentioned that this was a level 1 offence which, in the Crown Court, would mean a starting point sentence of 3 years in custody. Unan mitigated on his client’s behalf, focusing on his good character and, most importantly, future prospects. The magistrates stated that they were surprised that this case was in their court and not the Crown Court, but sentenced him to a 26-week suspended sentence and £2,500 compensation.

The fact that he was looking at a 3 year custodial sentence yet ended up with a 26-week suspended sentence was a great result, as it will allow him to focus on his blossoming boxing career.
