LEWIS NEDAS LAW IRAN DESK
Providing Legal Services to Iranians in the UK & Abroad
At Lewis Nedas Law we offer a wide range of legal services to Iranian individuals and businesses in the UK, as well as to Iranians living abroad who require legal assistance in the UK. Our Iran desk is led by our Iranian solicitors, Sherry Fard and Asal Nath, who are both in our Commercial and Litigation department. Sherry and Asal are fluent English and Farsi speakers and will provide invaluable advice and assistance with your personal and business needs.
IRANIAN MIGRATION TO THE UK
The Iranian community in the UK has grown since the first wave of immigration in 1979. Since then, there has been a steady increase in Iranians who have chosen to live and/or work in the UK, and those who live abroad and have businesses in, or business ties to, the UK.
Many of the Iranians who chose to settle in the UK reside in the popular boroughs of London, such as Richmond Upon Thames, Kensington and Chelsea, City of Westminster, and Camden. Being in the heart of Camden Town, and with offices in Mayfair, Lewis Nedas Law is well placed to cater to the legal needs of Iranians throughout London and beyond.
SANCTIONS AND THE EMERGING IRANIAN ECONOMY
Since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Iran has been subject to a number of sanctions for a variety of reasons. Economic sanctions imposed on Iran by other countries, mainly the US, have resulted in many Iranian residents in the UK and abroad facing difficulty with the legitimate movement of funds between Iran and the UK.
Many Iranians are not aware that transferring money from Iran to the UK has never been prohibited or illegal. However, the problem lies with the lack of direct banking facilities between Iran and the UK and the ill perceived stigma that such funds have come from the proceeds of crime. This flags up money laundering concerns for banks in the UK. Whilst many British officials are in favour of banking relations between Iran and the UK being reinstated, this is yet to happen. As it currently stands, Iranians are able to transfer their funds between Iran and the UK through appropriate UK based FCA approved money exchange services, subject to proving source of funds.
Since the implementation in 2016 of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreed with Iran, some sections of the Iranian economy have started to open up for business. The Trade and Investment Factsheet issued in April 2021, by the Department for International Trade records encouraging statistics on trade and investment between the UK and Iran, with £258 million in foreign direct investment from Iran to the UK. We are here to support and provide practical legal advice to Iranians living and/or working in the UK as well as those abroad with business interests in the UK.
We understand that for many Iranians, living and/or working in the UK, or those wanting to invest here, it can be challenging to deal with legal issues in a foreign country, particularly if there is a language barrier or cultural sensitivities that may impact your particular circumstances. We have solicitors who speak your language, literally, and can act as your point of contact with our team of specialist solicitors.
Our Iranian solicitors will guide you skilfully, with consideration and empathy, protecting your interests throughout.
