Firearms suitability reviews - Early legal help can resolve them more quickly

ammunition 1Our firearms law specialist Laura Saunsbury is regularly instructed to advise firearm or shotgun certificate holders whose suitability to remain a certificate holder is being reviewed by the police. Suitability reviews are on the increase and as a result in many police force areas there is a growing backlog of such cases, leading to extended waiting times before reviews are completed. Laura Saunsbury has had considerable success in a number of recent cases in persuading the police to complete their reviews more quickly than they would otherwise have done, and also to resolve them in favour of her clients. Seeking early legal help from our expert firearms law team can sometimes avoid revocation and so result in your guns and certificates being returned far more quickly, and at far lower cost, than if you have to challenge a revocation decision by taking an appeal to the Crown Court.

In one such case recently, our client, who is a keen clay target shooter and regularly takes part in competitions, contacted us two months after the police had removed his guns and certificates. Within a fortnight of us taking on the case, Laura Saunsbury had secured their return. Our grateful client and his wife expressed their appreciation in the following terms;

“Thank you so much for your assistance in all of this, Laura, we were very impressed with the work you put in on my behalf.  Prior to your involvement we really did think there was strong chance I would not be getting my guns or certificates back, and had it not been for you, I don’t believe  I would have got them back. Having you on board has been amazing.”

Another firearms licensing appeal successfully settled by Laura Saunsbury

firearmsOur firm's firearms law specialist Laura Saunsbury has been enjoying a run of successes in settling firearms licensing appeals for her clients, without needing to take the case to a full hearing in the Crown Court. Throughout 2017 Laura has dealt with a series of appeals against various police forces in England and Wales where she has presented such a strong case on paper for her client that the police have been persuaded to reconsider their decision and have voluntarily reinstated her client's firearm and/or shotgun certificate. In one such case which she successfully resolved last month, Laura's grateful client had this to say about her work:

"Laura Saunsbury at Lewis Nedas previously helped me enormously when I was wrongly accused of a criminal offence.  After being acquitted so completely by the jury in crown court, and my accuser found to be lying by the judge himself, you can imagine my dismay to then have my firearms certificate revoked by the police. Once again Laura came to my rescue and I now have my firearms back and can enjoy target shooting with my brothers again. Thanks to Laura I now have my life back as a certifying aircraft engineer which was all in jeopardy, had I not got justice.”  Matt from West Sussex.

Another shotgun certificate case success for Lewis Nedas Law and Laura Saunsbury

shotgun certificateA renowned breeder of Dexter cows had her shotgun certificate removed from her by the Police after they were alerted to concerns by a member of the public, who overreacted to remarks made by the farmer and her husband in a telephone conversation. The two day hearing of our client’s appeal was scheduled to take place at Reading Crown Court last month. However, after lengthy and skilful negotiations by our in-house firearms law expert Laura Saunsbury, the police eventually agreed to settle the appeal and reinstate the farmer's shotgun certificate voluntarily.

Our client’s daughter wrote to express her appreciation to Laura and her assistant Gary Smith for helping to resolve the situation for her mother;

“I know she is very thankful to have had both of you on her team. I know that you both put a lot of time and effort into the whole case and I understand that you get paid to do so but both of your patience with mother has been most appreciated by us all.”
