The Independent (07/11/2013) reported that the Met will have approximately 500 officers specialising in the investigation of the total remit of cybercrime for the London area. The new NCA will remain as the lead investigative agency for the country.

Cybercrime is the fastest growing criminal activity, and it seems that the Metropolitan Police, subject to stringent budget cuts, will transfer resources away from more traditional types of crime in order to deal with it.

Simultaneously, it appears that Silk Road 2.0 has risen from the ashes of Silk Road, which was closed down by the FBI five weeks ago (as we predicted in our blog 13/10/2013).

Silk Road 2.0 uses the Tor network and the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, as before, however there appears to be some differences in approach. It promises new enhanced security and insurance for account holders in the eventuality that the authorities will once again swoop and seize Bitcoins held in accounts.

It is also reported that two other anonymous drugs/black marketplaces have shut down voluntarily and misappropriated Bitcoins held in their customers' accounts e.g. Black Flag.

Silk Road 2.0 also claims that it will donate a percentage of its profits to "good causes, charities and organisations who support our cause, or who have similar interests."

This underlies the extent of the problem for investigative authorities. These 'marketplaces' will continue to pop up in the cyber world, and they will become increasingly sophisticated in all of their activities, including money laundering.
