Fresh reports suggest that the FSA are taking a more aggressive approach to wrongdoing in the City.

Despite the fact that the number of dawn raids against companies was down last year to twenty-one (there were twenty-six such raids in 2007), the FSA are now suggesting proposals for strict liability offences against directors/managers in the event of bank failures. Next month they bring a prosecution against a healthcare company for allegedly producing false and misleading statements to the market.

USA to Review 2003 Anglo–American Extradition Treaty?

It seems that after PM Cameron’s recent visit to the US, America has agreed to review the controversial treaty. This follows an earlier promise by Teresa May in November 2011 after the very thorough Baker Review.

A number of recent successful deportations to the US have caused deep anger, primarily because the 2003 treaty was aimed at alleged terrorism.

Vast Increase in Land Banking Fraud Investigations

City of London Fraud Police are currently involved in a large number of ‘land banking fraud’ investigations across the country. These frauds are very similar to the ‘boiler room share frauds’ but focus instead upon allegedly falsely representing that land is suitable for future development and which are, according to Police, simply bogus developments.

Stamp Duty Changes in Budget

The latest budget increases to 7% on sales of property over £2million. HRMC plans crack down to prevent individuals placing property into offshore companies. There will also be 15% stamp duty on properties over £2million purchased through a company.
