PM Backs New Strategy for Prosecution of Serious Crime

The Times on 12 May 2009 drew attention to the Prime Minister’s suggested overall of the prosecuting authorities’ approach to the prosecution of serious organised crime. He is advocating a new strategy focusing upon the business interests of alleged criminals, authorising the police to adopt a more aggressive approach to internet crime and  these types of criminal businesses.

High Court Judgement

Nick Brett recently acted for all three claimants in the case of Scopelight Ltd & Ors v Chief of Police for Northumbria & Ors [2009] EWHC 958 (QB) (07 May 2009) in which the High Court ruled last week that the police cannot, as a matter of law, retain property on behalf of a further private prosecutor under PACE 1984, once a decision not to prosecute has been taken.

National Broadsheet Interviews Senior Partner

Jeffrey Lewis has been interviewed by Cahal Milmo of The Independent in relation to the activities of SOCA and the Metropolitan Police in Operation Rize - the operation in June 2008 in which over 7,000 safety deposit boxes were seized and investigated.

Jeffrey headed a team which included Nick Brett and Siobhain Egan, and between them they have advised and/or represented over 70 clients whose boxes were seized and investigated. To date, over 98% of those boxes have been returned without prosecution or further investigation.
